The past two years, I’ve been a huge fangirl of this band named Jensen and The Flips. The first time I heard them sing was on Spotify’s Top Hits Philippines Playlist specifically their single called “Borrowed”. After I heard it, I had to turn to YouTube for more.
It was a real surprise to me because this band is my kind of beat. It is Pop, RnB with a hint of Soul in their music. The things that came to my mind were the following:
- That their songs are different kinds of ’emotions’ when it comes to love,
- That it has a sultry yet playful tune to it,
- That the vocals were really good, and
- That they can downright play on both studio and live versions.
That’s my short story of how I came to know this band.
You know those artists that are trying to break through the music industry for the first time and the tunes that you hear are raw and real? Their debut album, “Honeymoon”, was like that – raw and real with pure talent. I have to commend the guys behind the music. My top picks would definitely be “Dangerous”, “Slow”, “Crazy”, “Love Child” and “Stay With Me”.
Jensen and The Flips are now on their second album entitled “B T T R”. Their 12-track album now has a Tagalog song “Dapat Sana”, which was one of my top picks for the album along side “B T T R”, “Love + U”, “Make It”, “Come Closer” and “Magic”. There is a kind of consistency in their songs that I like. The band has a flair that make their music unique in the first place. Bass and guitar solos go along well too especially during their live performances.
Their Iloilo gig was scheduled last November 18, 2017 (it was my birthday too) so I grabbed the opportunity to have a “Meet and Greet” with them. It was a birthday wish come true that I finally saw them play!
This band exceeded my expectations for their live performance. It was merry, cool, and fun. I loved their studio tracks but it was even better live. For a fangirl like me, it was fulfilling to see them play and groove at the same time.
Jensen and The Flips are on the rise in the indie scene of Manila. Hopefully, the whole Philippines would get to know their talent and the type of sound they can offer to the listeners.
